The Town of Urbana Board has approved a draft of a new
proposed sign law.
The law is designed to permit businesses to place signs
throughout the community in an effort to direct visitors and
tourists to the Town’s numerous businesses and attractions.
Participating businesses will be encouraged to place a
series of uniform signs where needed to lead visitors to
their location. The law is based upon the blue “New York
State Tourist Oriented Directional Signs” commonly seen
along State highways. A similar program is in place in the
Adirondack State Park.
The
proposed law is an effort to help direct visitors to our
outlying businesses and, at the same time, avoid the “sign
clutter” that would detract from our scenic landscape. The
law is unique in that it was developed by a committee of
area businesses working in conjunction with the Town
Planning Board. It is a proactive ordinance which is
designed to “encourage” rather than “restrict”. The Town of
Urbana Board hopes that, once implemented, this law will
serve as a model for the rest of the Keuka Lake area.
The
complete law can be read
